What Is a Pot Cartridge?
A pot cartridge, or simply “cartridge” when there isn’t any context, is a device used with electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) to vaporize liquids containing substances such as cannabis, nicotine, or THC (the active ingredient in marijuana). The most common type of cartridge is built around a battery, an atomizer (which heats up the liquid, releasing its flavor), and a tank (a container holding the liquid).
Pot cartridges are generally designed for use with a specific e-cigarette system (such as the Juul brand), although sometimes manufacturers will make them available for other brands too.
These devices are also referred to as “cigalikes,” “cig mod pens,” “pod mods,” “tank style,” or “clearomizers,” depending on who you ask.
Cartridges come in several shapes and sizes, but the most popular one right now is the Juul. It has become wildly popular because of its sleek design and ease of use. But it’s not the only option out there — here are some other options you might consider.

JUUL VAPE PEN CARTRIDGE VS. JUUL POD MOD
There are two main types of pot cartridges: the JUUL vape pen cartridge and the JUUL pod mod cartridge. They both do basically the same thing, which is why they’re often sold under the same name. Here’s a quick breakdown of each:
Juul Pen Cartridge: This is the original type of pot cartridge, made by the company Juul. It looks like a normal pen, and works just like one. When you take off the top part, you see a battery inside that charges up via USB cable.
It comes with two parts: the e-juice cartridge, and a small charger. The e-juice is usually a clear solution, and contains nicotine or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). You fill the cartridge with liquid, put it back together, and then charge the battery. Once charged, you load the cartridge into your e-cigarette and go.
If you choose a high-concentration juice, this might give you a stronger hit than you expected. If you prefer a less intense experience, you can always dilute the juice yourself using a dropper (or even a syringe). However, you should never use alcohol or any other solvent to dilute your juice.
You can purchase a few different flavors of JUUL cartridges, including tobacco, mint, menthol, and others. The JUUL pods are similar to the pen cartridges, except that they don’t require charging. Instead of loading a cartridge, you need to load a pod directly into the bottom portion of the pen.

Juul Pod Mod: This newer version of the pot cartridge was invented by the same manufacturer responsible for the JUUL pen cartridge. As a result, they share the same size, shape, and material. The difference between the two is mostly cosmetic.
One huge advantage is that the pod mod allows users to customize exactly how strong of a hit they get. With the pen cartridge, you get whatever amount of juice is stored in the reservoir. With the pod mod, however, you can adjust the strength of your hit through settings on the device itself.
Another advantage is that, unlike traditional vapes, the pod mod doesn’t use a heating element to heat up the liquid. That means your juice won’t contain anything harmful and you don’t have to worry about it burning your lips.
However, you still need to charge the device regularly. Like the pen cartridge, you load the e-liquid into a reservoir, but instead of having to charge it, you can fill it with liquid whenever you want to use it. The downside to using a pod mod is that the battery tends to last only a couple of hours before needing to be recharged. Also, since the heating element is located on the outside, it is easy for the juice to leak onto your clothes and potentially damage them.
Pros: Great for newbies; customizable hit strengths.
Cons: Need to recharge every day; leaking juice can destroy your clothing.
VAPORIZING CANNABIS AND TOBACCO
For those who enjoy smoking weed, there are a number of ways to do that without combusting the plant. One of the easiest methods is to vape it. There are a variety of different types of pot cartridges, including ones for tobacco and herbal blends.
The biggest differences between the two are the flavors. Tobacco vape cartridges typically include tobacco, menthol, and flavors like cherry and vanilla. Herbal vape cartridges are a little harder to categorize. Sometimes, they’re just called “herbal” while others include actual herbs like lavender and rosemary.
Herbal vape cartridges also tend to contain higher concentrations of THC, making them better for getting a really nice buzz. If you’re curious about the effects of different concentrates, you can also buy pre-made vape juices that range from 10% to 80%. There are also e-liquids that are specifically designed to be mixed with other ingredients.
